Helping mothers get direct access to quality care.

Africa has one of the worst prenatal and postnatal care practices in the world. Hence, the proportion of maternal deaths during and immediately post-delivery is significant. Again, this is due in part to the unavailability of the appropriate medical care and expertise in their communities. Almost 6 in 10 pregnant women choose to deliver at home because of the absence of the essential medical environment and qualified personnel. Numerous factors can be blamed for this practice; factors such as proximity to essential medical facility, financial incompetence, lack of well-trained medical staff, lack of prenatal and postnatal education, and also common practice of home delivery form the basis for a lot of traditional and rural communities.

How Project Health Africa Plans to Help

  • Awareness program to enhance prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal education
  • Educate on the importance of hospital delivery, and if appropriate, provide the medical expertise needed to assist in home delivery
  • Educate on the need to get the appropriate vaccination before pregnancy or within the earliest possible time post-delivery, for example, vaccination against rubella, measles, mumps, etc.
  • Educate, and provide needed diagnostic measures for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, syphilis, and other STDs
  • Provide the needed medication for the aforementioned diseases at the time of diagnosis and thereafter in order to prevent the transmission of these from mother to child through vertical means and otherwise
